(modulator/demodulator) модемустройство, позволяющее компьютеру связываться с другим компьютером по телефонным линиям. Для этого модем преобразует цифровые сигналы в аналоговые аудиосигналы, которые он передаёт по телефонным линиям связи и наоборот - принимает с телефонной линии аналоговые аудиосигналы и преобразует их в цифровой вид. Для передачи информации об адресате вызова модемы используют некоторый набор команд, обычно Hayes-совместимый.
